I was surprised at how readable and interesting I found this book. A memoir; Barack Obama weaves his story of self-discovery as a multi-race African-American in Hawaii, Indonesia, Chicago and Kenya. A good read. Great insight into who the 44th President of the United States is. By the way, Barack Obama wrote this book well before he was a candidate for the presidency or the state legislature. Obama was encouraged to write the book since he was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Enjoy!
Pop culture hasn't only been enjoyable is Nathan Rabin's life- it is his life. From using it as an escape in his childhood to having it be his work now, being The Onion's A.V. Club Head Writer. Each chapter begins with a specific song, movie, book, or TV show which encorporates with this chapter in his life, whether it be using Susana Kaysen's memoir 'Girl, Interupted' to potray his feelings of being in a mental hospital at age 14 (due to an accidental suicide attempt) or using the song Brick by Ben Folds Five to describe the incident where his girlfriend, who had come to loathe him, became pregnant with his baby. This book is one of the most enjoyable memoirs I have ever read.
Three Cups of Tea One Man's Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
Inspirational. Reads like a novel. The subtitle to this book says it all. By building schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Dr. Greg (as he is affectionately known there) has changed the way many people there see Americans, which, in turn, has done more to promote peace than many of our formal diplomatic efforts (...and don't even get me started on the war....) I hope that this book inspires some of our young bright students to go out and make a difference in this way!
