During the seige of Russia in WWII, a young Jewish man Lev and a deserter Koyla are captured. The only way they can go free and avoid execution is to find a dozen eggs for the Colonel's daughter's wedding cake. Together they head out over a war-torn Russia. Also a coming of age story, it's funny, tragic, gruesome and beautiful all at once. The characters become like real people and are hard to let go once the book is finished. It provides an impeccably researched and oftentimes disturbing picture of Russia during the war, and is a fantastic read. Reccomended for readers on the mature side.

A heartwarming story of a girl and her siblings abandoned by their mother. A very determined 13-year-old courageously leads her three younger siblings to the safety of a new home.

Such a great book. I first read it in 8th grade and even into college and beyond. I've read it so many times there is no longer a cover, and missing a few pages.
