01/15/10 - Just received a thumbs up from a student for The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series, by Michael Scott, and I just ordered Books 1 to 3. They'll be on the New Books pyramid soon!
Sabriel is a young woman living on the modern side of the wall that divides two countries, one of them the Old Kingdom, where magic resides along with dangerous spirits. When Sabriel's father, the Abhorsen, a man that controls the uprising of the dead and sends them back to death, goes missing, she crosses over the wall to the Old Kingdom to get her father back and prevent the rise of evil. Along the way Sabriel is joined by several memorable characters and undergoes a harrowing and extraordinaryly exciting journey. It's the first book in the Old Kingdom series, but can stand alone. It is probably one of the best fantasy stories of all time, dark and incredibly well written with fantastic characters.
