Trolling Facebook for Reading Recommendations

Here's a Facebook conversation regarding our upcoming Senior novel project wherein students pick a novel they will analyze:

**********
Me
So JAZZED by Jamee's (unsolicited) book recommendation of Room by Emma Donoghue that I thought I'd ask for book recs for our upcoming "Senior novel" project, from you. The novel must lend itself to writing a complex, thoughtful essay, and yes, it's for Seniors.

My comment I'm collecting the info for a SEABURY READS blog post, so let me know if you object to having your first name used. You can send a personal message/reply, if you like. Also, any comments by former Senior-novel-writers? What was YOUR Senior novel? :D

(AllyandBrian and Jamee like this.)

Jackie Seniors in high school, or people like us in our twilight years?

Me Either, Jackie :D

Patrick I've always been a fan of Riddley Walker.

Wendy I did senior paper on Homecoming by Cynthia Voight...lol LOVED that book..I still read it every couple of years over and over..that it's falling apart.

Sarah I read ROOM on my iPad - very riveting.

Me Funny you should mention Riddley Walker, Patrick. Mr. VA just told me this morning that we need another copy for the project!

Julia My Sr. paper was about The Cancer Ward by Solzhenitsyn (try typing that 50 times. Wow- I was some kind of crazy!) Actually I loved it and it sparked my ongoing love of Russian authors. However, I would recommend to the intrepid senior Anna Karenina or Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita to get your feet wet and not necessarily Solzhenitsyn (unless you're really into Stalin, gulags, and cancer).

Sarah That reminds me of the Russian lit class I had at Seabury :)

Penny (former English teacher) Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry; Incendiary by Chris Cleave (who also wrote Little Bee); The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Prodigal Summer - Barbara Kingsolver; Kavalier and Clay, Michael Chabon.... I could go on and on.

Lindsay Life of Pi is one of the best books I have ever read. It's an easier than senior read, but the metaphors are beautiful and would lend themselves to an awesome paper. I did my paper on Crime and Punishment, and I absolutely loved it. Flatland was awesome, especially with its ingenious take on putting perspective into perspective. And my favorite novel of all time is Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Me LOVING these titles ... ordering new copies and duplicates, and working on the blog post ...

Sarah Now whatever happened to the movie that was being made of Life of Pi? By M. Night Shaliman?

Sarah And Linda, I'm ashamed to admit I feel a little jealous about this because I always thought of you as "my" librarian. As it turns out, you are others' as well :)

Penny I forgot The Road. One of the most amazing love stories I have ever read.

************

Did I mention how much I enjoy making connections via Facebook? This fantastic exchange is one of the reasons.

Thanks, everyone! Putting this post on the Senior novel page, right now.

Worth a Look: An eBook Lending Club

This looks very interesting ...

Kindle Users form eBook Lending Club on Facebook

But will publishers go for it?

Here's how it works.
